Acute Sinusitis
Falling sick is a part of living. While some of the infections that we may fall prey to can be severe there are milder infections which may resemble common colds. One of these infections, that in many ways seems to be like the common cold, is that of sinusitis. Here you will find that sinusitis is divided into chronic sinusitis and acute sinusitis.Acute sinusitis is often associated with upper respiratory infections and is covered in a separate article. Acute sinusitis primarily presents as pain over the infected area with or without headache and associated facial pain.
While there are many similarities between these two infections you need to understand that the treatment for these infections will be somewhat different. For the moment we will concentrate on understanding acute sinusitis.Acute sinusitis is typically preceded by a viral upper respiratory infection (URI), such as the common cold. Acute sinusitis last for days up to three weeks. Acute SinusitisIn most cases, antibiotics are prescribed for patients with specific findings of persistent purulent nasal discharge and facial pain or tenderness who are not improving after seven days or those with severe symptoms of rhinosinusitis, regardless of duration.
The first step to understanding this infection is to see where you will first begin to develop the symptoms of acute sinusitis. Generally the infections will develop in the cheekbone sinus areas and that of the nasal sinus areas. These areas are given these medical terms.
For the cheekbone sinus areas the name that is given is Maxillary sinuses. The nasal sinus areas are called the Ethmoid sinuses. While these are the main sections where you can develop the symptoms of acute sinusitis there is a chance of seeing the symptoms develop in the frontal sinus areas.Acute sinusitis is a bacterial infection in one or more sinuses, which include the maxillary, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses. Acute sinusitis is defined as disease lasting less than onemonth.
When you first start experiencing acute sinusitis, you will find that the infection usually lasts for a short period of time. The time to develop the infection into full blown acute sinusitis is a few days. The period of infection is about a week’s duration. In most cases, antibiotics are prescribed for patients with specific findings of persistent purulent nasal discharge and facial pain or tenderness who are not improving after seven days or those with severe symptoms of rhinosinusitis, regardless of duration.
During this period of time you can see about taking some medication to stop the acute sinusitis from becoming worse. Generally there is no real need to use any type of medication as the infection is known to clear up on its own. If you do wish to use some type of medication there are both home remedies and chemical based medications that you can use.
Currently the home medications that you can use for acute sinusitis are using a humidifier, steam inhalation and in some cases you can drink lots of fluids to thin the production of excess mucus. Some people feel that applying a warm and moist wash cloth to the face several times a day can help you when you are faced with acute sinusitis.
The other type of medication that you can use will include pain killers, decongestants, antibiotics, and some over the counter medications. These are the medications that you can use to counter the effects of acute sinusitis.Acute sinusitis is one of many medical disorders that can be caused by a bacterial infection. Acute sinusitis primarilypresents as pain over the infected area with or without headache andassociated facial pain.
Since acute sinusitis is usually over in a week’s time keeping yourself healthy during this time is imperative. If you are not too sure about any possible complications arising then talking with your doctor should help you to understand the real nature of acute sinusitis and how quickly this infection can disappear.
